Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan:
Eligibility
Participation
Provincial law requires that all residents and their dependents
register with the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan:
- residents coming from other provinces in Canada must register
themselves and their dependents within one month after becoming
eligible for coverage
- residents coming from outside Canada must register within
one month of the date they become a resident
- a resident may opt out of the program for a 12 month period
starting July 1st following the date that the resident signs a declaration
to that effect
Eligibility
All residents are eligible for coverage regardless of health,
age or financial status.
Members of the Canadian Armed Forces, R.C.M.P., tourists, transients
and visitors, or individuals serving terms in penitentiaries are
not eligible for benefits.
An eligible dependent is:
- a spouse
- an unmarried dependent child under age 21 (age 25 if in full-time
attendance at an accredited educational institute)
- an unmarried child age 21 or over who is dependent due to
mental or physical infirmity
Date Coverage Begins
- new residents from outside Canada are eligible for benefits
on the date of their arrival
- new residents from elsewhere in Canada are eligible for benefits
the first day of the third month following the date of arrival
- dependents are eligible for benefits on the later of the dates that the insured's coverage becomes effective or the date that the first dependent is acquired
Coverage Terminates
- a resident leaving the province to establish permanent residence
elsewhere in Canada may purchase coverage for the period from
the date of departure to the last day of the second month thereafter
- a resident leaving the province to establish permanent residence
outside Canada may purchase coverage for the three-month period
following the date of departure
Coverage Extended
- coverage continues during temporary absences of up to 12 months
- students attending an educational institution outside the
province are entitled to benefits if they intend to return to
the province
