Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan:
Out of Province Coverage


Within Canada but Out of Province

Hospital charges are covered up to the rate of the provincial plan of the province in which the service is received.

Medical charges are covered under a federal-provincial agreement; out-of-province recipients will be insured for all benefits offered by the province in which they are treated.


Out of Country Coverage

Hospital charges outside Canada for medically required hospital services are only payable when provided in active treatment or auxiliary hospitals and limited to:

Professional and medical charges are covered up to the Alberta Health Care Insurance schedule of rates in effect at the time of treatment.

Prior approval is required from Alberta Health to receive any coverage for the treatment of drug and alcohol abuse, eating disorders and other addictive behaviour disorders out of country
