Eligibility
Participation
Coverage is not compulsory. It is the responsibility of every resident to enroll themselves and their dependents.
Eligibility
Any resident, regardless of health, age or financial status, who is a Canadian citizen or lawfully admitted for permanent residence, makes a home in BC and is physically present at least 6 months per year is eligible for benefits.
Eligible dependents are spouses or children ordinarily resident in British Columbia. A child means a person who is not married and is under the age of 19 or is in full-time attendance at school or university and under the age of 25, and who is wholly or mainly supported by an adult.
Landed immigrants and persons on student or employment authorization are covered on first day of third month after entry in BC.
Tourists, transients, visitors, members of the RCMP and Canadian Armed Forces are not eligible.
Date Coverage Begins
New residents are eligible to become subscribers on the last day of the second month following the month of arrival in the province.
Dependent coverage begins on the later of date of insured's coverage or date dependent is acquired providing application for dependent coverage is made within 60 days of acquisition and the appropriate premiums are paid.
Coverage Terminates
Residents leaving the province to establish full-time residence elsewhere in Canada are eligible for benefits until the expiration of

a reasonable period for travelling time, not to exceed three months, and
-
a further period ending at midnight of the last day of the second month following the month in which the travelling period ended.

residents leaving the province to establish full-time residence outside of Canada are eligible until the last day of the second month following departure. No travelling time is available.
Coverage Extended
Full-time students outside the province who remain BC residents are covered upon submission of satisfactory proof of attendance at school.
Coverage continues during temporary absences of up to 12 months providing the necessary premiums have been paid.
