Professional Services
The Provincial Medical Services Commission sets the fee schedules refereed to below.
Physicians
-
payments to physicians are made in accordance with a tariff of fees (fee schedule) authorized by the Medical Services Plan Commission.

all medically required services
-
medically required surgical procedures
-
obstetrics
-
administration of anaesthetics
-
laboratory services in the office incidental to the physician's other services (electrocardiogram, hemoglobin, urinalysis, etc.)
-
specialist services must be referred
-
non-referred specialist services are paid at the general practitioner level. (Any difference is the responsibility of the individual).
-
patients are free to choose the physician of their choice and physicians are free to choose their patients (they are not obligated to treat any insured person).
Optometrists/Ophthalmologists
-
necessary diagnostic services for examination of the eye
-
one test per 24 months for the purpose of prescribing corrective lenses for ages 16 to 64
-
Orthoptic treatment limited to $50 per patient per year when referred by a medical practitioner
-
cost of lenses or fitting are not covered
-
not covered outside the province
Chiropractors
-
under age 65: one initial and 11 subsequent office visits per
year
-
age 65 or over: one initial and 14 subsequent office visits
per year
-
payment per fee schedule

no payment for x-rays
-
not covered outside the province
Naturopaths
-
under age 65: one initial and 11 subsequent office visits per year

age 65 and over: one initial and 14 subsequent office visits per year

Chiropodists/Podiatrists

there is a limit of $150 per patient in any one year

Physiotherapists (includes the services of a massage practitioner)

age 65 and over: one initial and 14 subsequent office visits per year

Osteopaths
Treated same as and reimbursed same as a physician in British Columbia
