Medical Services Plan
Nursing Care
Private Duty Nursing
Services of a registered nurse including the cost of her board, up to $40 per year per patient are deemed to be insured services only when the services are recommended by a physician and provided within the province.
Victorian Order of Nurses
Services of VON, acting with or under an attending physician, within the province, will be paid at $2.00 net/visit to a yearly maximum of $40.00 per patient. This limit does not apply to the administration of injections on physician's instructions.
Canadian Red Cross - Nursing
Services rendered by nurses at Red Cross outposts where a physician's services are not regularly available are paid at the rate of $2.00 per office service or $4.00 per home visit. The nurse must act on the instruction of a physician unless treatment is for minor injuries and infection.
Nursing Homes/Homes for the Aged
No coverage.
Chronic Care
Provided to patients requiring 24 hour a day skilled nursing services and regular medical attention but without the resources of an acute or rehabilitation hospital.
Provided in a extended-care unit of an acute hospital or in a separate chronic or convalescent hospital.
Care in residential facilities is available in:

personal care home
-
intermediate care facilities
-
mental health boarding facilities
-
private hospital
-
extended care hospitals
Services provided:
-
standard ward (room and board)
-
necessary nursing
-
drugs, biological and related preparations
-
laboratory and radiological procedures and the necessary interpretations
-
other services rendered by persons paid by the chronic and convalescent hospital and approved the Medical Services Plan
-
utilization fees apply.
Home Care
No coverage under the Medical Services Plan.
The Ministry of Health provides some coverage to persons who have lived in British Columbia for the 12 months preceding application for this program.
An example of some of the items covered are:
-
hospital replacement where on referral by a doctor such things as nursing care, physiotherapy etc. are provided at no cost to the patient;
-
non-hospital replacement where the patient must pay for items such as dressings, medication, etc.;
-
long-term care at no charge to the elderly and those persons with terminal illness;
-
homemaker service with varying patient costs;
-
home maintenance and repair when determined necessary
