Disability Pensions (Updated for January 2012)

To qualify for benefits, a person must suffer from a severe and prolonged mental or physical disability that prevents them from engaging in any substantially gainful occupation. The person must also have normally contributed to the CPP for at least 4 of the past 6 years.

Benefits commence after 4 months of total permanent disability and continue as long as the claimant remains totally disabled, to a maximum age of 65.

The maximum monthly disability pension benefit is $1,185.50, plus $224.62 for dependent children.

Pensions are taxable income.
