Survivor Benefits (Updated January 2002)
The deceased must have normally contributed for either one-third of the years in the contributory period or 10 years.
The maximum monthly CPP survivor pension benefit is:
- $493.28 if under age 65,
- $530.75 if 65 or older,
- plus $208.77 for each dependent child.
The maximum monthly QPP survivor pension benefit is:
- $437.76 if under age 45 without dependent children,
- $716.15 if under age 45 with dependent children,
- $745.77 if under age 45 and disabled,
- $745.77 for ages 45-64,
- $530.75 if age 65 and older,
- plus $66.29 for each dependent child.
Dependent children are:
- unmarried and under the age of 18 or
- attending school or university full-time and between the ages of 18 and 25.
Pensions are taxable income.
Death Benefit
A death benefit of 6 times the monthly retirement income to a maximum of $2,500 is paid to the spouse or estate of the deceased contributor.
