HSA Statistics 2002 (Benefit Tip © 2003)

The following 2002 statistics can shed some light on the popularity of health spending accounts.

Annual Refunds

  • The average year-end refund to employers was 33% of annul cost.
  • 50% of the clients won’t need to pay for benefits during the first 5-months of 2003.
  • Terminated employees generated one third of the refund, with the remainder coming from employees who did not spend all the funds within the two-year period specified by CCRA.

    Monthly Contributions

  • The average monthly employer contribution was $107
  • Monthly contribution ranging from $25 to $500.
  • The average deposit balance carried into 2003 by employees was $455.
  • Less than 1% of clients change their contribution schedule.

    Claims

  • The average claim was $258.
  • Employees made an average of 2.4 claims during the year.
  • 99% of claims were fully paid within one business day of receipt.
